Gland Packing Maintenance
6.1.8 Maintenance of packing
Ensure the correct materials are used
Remove the stuffing box gland
Remove the old packing and seal cage halves and clean the stuffing box
Verify the packing type and size
Measure the stuffing box for proper packing length
Cut packing slightly shorter than measured length
Insert each ring of packing separately and seat firmly
Stagger the rings at 90° to 180° angles apart
1 Yearly Pump Bearing Lubrication Oil Change
Periodic inspection (semi-annual)
Ensure the maximum time between cleaning and lubrication change is one year.
Determine if environmental severity dictates a shorter frequency.
Complete cleaning during a major overhaul
Dismantle the pump.
Use a brush and wash out the housing with hot oil or non-toxic solvent.
Flush the housing with light mineral oil to prevent rust.
Remove solid particles with a brush dipped in hot oil while spinning the bearing.
Is there badly oxidized grease present?
Shaft Inspection
6.1.7 Maintenance of shaft and shaft sleeve
Examine the shaft condition at the following locations
Is there any rusting or pitting on the shaft?
Are the anti-friction bearings properly fitted to the pump shaft?
Is there any distortion in the shaft keyways?
Is the impeller loose on the shaft?
Is the shaft bent or distorted?
Is the sleeve worn appreciably?
Measure the depth of grooves on the sleeve (in mm)
Initial Pump Bearing Lubrication
Pump Lubricants
Determine the mode of lubrication of the pump set
Verify pre-greased components
Bearings – Grease Lubricated
Check the bearing frame cavities for grease and add grease as necessary
Remove the grease fittings or pipe plug closest to the cover after start-up to allow excess grease to flow out
Monitor the bearing temperatures until they return to normal
Investigate any marked increase in bearing temperature after normal operation
Recommended Grease Lubricants
500 Hourly Pump Bearing Lubrication
5.2.4.2 Recommended grease fill quantities
Verify grease fill quantities for Frame 8H
6.1.10.2 Grease lubrication
Connect grease gun to the nipple
Press grease into the bearing housing until it appears in the gap between the housing and shaft, then stop greasing
Record the operating temperature of the bearing
Is the temperature rise above ambient within 55 °C (131 °F) or a combined maximum of 95 °C (204 °F)?
Is there a continuously rising temperature or an abrupt temperature rise?
If temperature issues are observed, describe the actions taken to investigate the cause
