Wearing Ring Inspection
Maintenance of wearing rings
Has the pump performance decreased appreciably due to excessive wearing ring clearance?
Enter the original nominal design running clearance (in mm)
Is rotor removal and resetting of the seal required after adjusting the wearing ring gap?
Refer to mechanical seal manufacturer's User Instructions and note any specific requirements.
Measuring wearing ring gap
Select the method used for checking wearing ring clearance
Ensure bearing frame support bolts are re-tightened after adjustment
Disconnect pump-coupling halves if required
Gland Packing Maintenance
6.1.8 Maintenance of packing
Ensure correct packing materials are used
Remove the stuffing box gland
Remove old packing and seal cage halves and clean the stuffing box
Verify correct type and size of new packing
Measure the stuffing box for proper length of packing
Cut packing slightly shorter than measured length
Insert each ring of packing separately and seat firmly
Stagger the rings at 90° to 180° angles apart
Bearing Maintenance
6.7.3 Bearing installation and removal
Ensure proper fit is maintained during bearing installation
Was a pulling device used to remove bearings from the shaft?
Support the bearing cone with a split ring and press the shaft out using an arbor press
Methods for mounting a bearing on the pump shaft
Heat the bearing to a uniform temperature of 120 °C (250 °F)
Quickly mount the heated bearing on the shaft
Apply force using an arbor press if alternate method is used
Ensure the cone is never cocked when forcing a bearing onto a shaft
Wearing Ring Maintenance
Adjusting wearing ring gap
Remove rotor and reset seal if necessary for pumps with mechanical seals.
Determine the actual ring gap.
Is the desired ring gap achievable with current shim pack?
Restore or replace wearing surfaces if necessary.
Loosen the 4 screws (or nuts) between the bearing frame and the stuffing box head.
Break the shim joint by tightening the two adjusting bolts and remove the shims.
Adjust shim pack thickness to achieve desired wearing gap.
Select shim stock colour code for adjustment.
Gland Packing Inspection
5.8.2 Pumps fitted with packed gland
Is there visible leakage from the gland?
Ensure gland nuts are initially finger-tight only.
Is leakage taking place soon after the stuffing box is pressurized?
Adjust the gland evenly to ensure visible leakage and concentric alignment of the gland ring.
Is the gland packing overheating?
Are hot liquids being pumped?
If necessary, slacken the gland nuts to achieve leakage.
Run the pump for 30 minutes with steady leakage.
