Pump Maintenance
6.7 Disassembly
Ensure safety and availability of parts
6.7.1 Preliminary to dismantling
Isolate motor and lock off electrical supply in accordance with local regulations.
Isolate suction and discharge valves.
Remove coupling guards and disconnect the coupling halves.
Drain pump casing and remove any auxiliary piping if applicable.
Lay out all parts in the order in which they are removed for convenience at re-assembly.
Protect all machined faces against metal-to-metal contact and corrosion.
Gland Packing Maintenance
6.1.8 Maintenance of packing
Use a good grade of non-asbestos packing with a high temperature surface lubricant for packing the stuffing box.
Ensure flax packing is not used to prevent rapid wear of the shaft sleeve.
Remove the stuffing box gland.
Remove the old packing and seal cage halves and clean the stuffing box.
Verify the packing to be used is of the correct type and size.
Measure the stuffing box to determine the proper length of packing.
Cut packing slightly shorter than measured to prevent butting of the ends and buckling.
Insert each ring of packing separately, pushing it as far as possible into the stuffing box and seating it firmly.
300 Hourly Pump Bearing Lubrication
Recommended Grease Fill Quantities
Select the frame type for lubrication
Enter the re-lubrication quantity for Line Bearing (g)
Enter the re-lubrication quantity for Thrust Bearing (g)
Grease Lubrication Procedure
Connect grease gun to the nipple
Press grease into the bearing housing until the first signs of it appear in the gap between the housing and shaft
Is the temperature rise above ambient within the normal range (not exceeding 55 °C or a combined maximum of 95 °C)?
Is there a continuously rising temperature or an abrupt temperature rise?
Mechanical Seal Inspection
Pumps fitted with mechanical seal
Ensure no adjustment is made to the mechanical seal
Check for any initial leakage
Run in the pump mechanical seal using clean liquid before pumping dirty liquids
Start external flush or quench before running the pump
Allow external flush or quench to flow after the pump has stopped
Ensure the mechanical seal is not run dry
Mechanical seals
Verify no adjustment is possible for the mechanical seal
Impeller Clearance Check
5.3 Impeller clearance
Measure the current impeller clearance in mm
Is the impeller clearance within the original nominal design range of 0.25 to 0.50 mm?
Has the pump performance decreased appreciably due to excessive wearing ring clearance?
Renew or overhaul the rings if necessary
