Wipe the belt with a dry cloth to remove surface dirt.

Wash the belt with soap and water and rinse well.

Ensure no belt dressing is used on the V-belt drive.

Checking and Adjusting Belt Tension

Apply deflection force (50-75 pounds) and measure deflection between pulley centers.

Is the deflection between 5/8” to 3/4”?

Measure the outside circumference of the belt to the nearest 1/4”.

Calculate and elongate the belt to the new length using the formula: Circumference x .0075 and .001.

Remove the cutter assembly from the cutter shaft

Remove the drive pins holding the ring gear to the cutter bank

Drive off the ring gear progressively and uniformly around its circumference

Inspect and clean the cutter bank, removing any burrs, scale, or dirt

Inspect the cooling tower for scale build-up

Is there visible scale build-up in the condenser?

Measure the current bleed off rate

Enter the amount of water evaporated

Is the bleed off rate equal to the evaporation rate?

Adjust the bleed off valve if necessary

Check the oil level in the sight glass

Is the oil level below 1/4 of the sight glass?

Add two quarts of 300 S SU viscosity refrigeration oil if needed

Has the crankcase heater been energized for at least four hours?

Record the oil pressure gauge reading

Remove the belt guard and loosen motor hold-down bolts

Move the motor and sheave closer to the compressor until there is enough slack to remove the old belts

Clean the sheave groove if necessary with non-flammable, non-toxic degreasing agent or commercial detergent

Install new belts by rotating the belt and sheaves to obtain seating in the grooves

Note on drives with more belt grooves than needed: Use the grooves closest to the motor and compressor. Ensure belts are slack on the same side of the drive, preferably the bottom, before tightening.
