5.5.6 Cleaning and installation of bearings

Clean the disassembled parts of the bearing with high quality cleaning oil

Apply the proper amount of grease to the cleaned parts

Protect the cleaned parts from contamination before and during assembly

Ensure shaft mounted parts inside the bearings are in place before installation

Avoid ingress of dust and foreign matter during installation

Avoid hammering during cleaning and installation

Use extreme care and ensure clean conditions during installation and assembly

Regular examination — Periodical change of oil

Drain the oil reservoir of self-lubricated bearings

Is the motor high speed (3600 rpm) or is there severe oil discoloration or contamination?

Flush the reservoir with kerosene if contamination occurs

Thoroughly drain the reservoir of the flushing material

Refill the reservoir to the center of oil sight glass with rust and oxidation inhibited turbine grade oil

Refer to the outline and lubrication nameplate for the correct viscosity and record it here

Check the current oil level on the sight gauge

Is the oil level above the maximum mark on the sight gauge?

Is the oil level below the minimum mark on the sight gauge?

Add oil if the level is below the minimum mark

Drain oil if the level is above the maximum mark

Was excessive make-up oil added?

Investigate and describe any oil leaks if excessive make-up oil was added

Check valve and stop valve inspection

Inspect the check valve for signs of wear or damage

Inspect the stop valve for signs of wear or damage

Ensure the check valve is protecting the pump from reverse flow and excessive backpressure

Ensure the stop valve is functioning correctly during priming, starting, and shutdown of the pump

Close the stop valve before stopping the pump

Verify the pump is not operated against a high static head without closing the stop valve

Refer to measures stated in 4.1.2 'Measurement of insulation resistance' for standards and record observations.

Check for accumulation on coils

Are coils kept warm when motor is not in use if moisture is present?

Check for discoloring of coils due to overheating

Ensure no movement of wedges from their original position

Ensure the binding at the coil end is in its normal position
