Open each air bleed petcock prior to engine startup.

Close petcock when hissing stops and water begins to flow out in a solid steady stream.

Start engine and reopen each petcock.

Has the temperature of the jacket water circuit stabilized as indicated by the panel mounted temperature gauge?

Use a non-flammable cleaning solvent and a soft bristle brush to remove protective film from new pistons.

Dry pistons with compressed air, coat with clean engine oil and assemble into engine immediately.

Immerse pistons in a concentrated solution of a liquid cleaner heated to 122° F (50° C) for a minimum of 24 hours to remove carbon deposits.

Use a hard brass brush to remove stubborn deposits.

Use a ring groove cleaner to remove carbon deposits from piston ring grooves.

Clean oil drain notches located in oil control ring groove without using a wire brush.

OIL COOLER CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Wear protective eye and face shields, gloves, and coveralls.

Ensure no mechanical removal equipment is used that may cause flying debris.

Inspect the oil cooler for plugged tubes or scale deposits.

Verify that the increase in oil temperature is not due to a malfunctioning auxiliary water pump, loose belts, a faulty thermostat, or excessive engine load.

Protect all gasket and seal surfaces.

Ensure the engine is turned off and cooled down

Gather necessary tools and replacement filter element

Locate the oil reservoir and vent tube

Remove the old filter element from the oil reservoir

Install the new filter element into the oil reservoir

Ensure the vent tube is properly connected to the oil filler assembly

Remove the valves from the cylinder head

Clean the valves with a power driven wire brush

Ensure no scratches on the valve stem after cleaning

Wear face mask protection when operating a power driven wire brush

Is valve recession greater than 0.118 in. (3.00 mm)?
