Examine the shaft condition at key points
Is there any rusting or pitting on the shaft?
Are the anti-friction bearings properly fitted?
Is there any distortion in the shaft keyways?
Is the impeller loose on the shaft?
Is the shaft bent or distorted?
Is the sleeve worn appreciably?
Measure the depth of grooves on the sleeve (in mm)

Press grease into the bearing housing until the first signs of it appear in the gap between the housing and shaft, then stop greasing
Record the operating temperature of the bearing housing
Is the temperature rise above ambient within 55 °C (131 °F) or a combined maximum of 95 °C (204 °F)?
Is there a continuously rising temperature or an abrupt temperature rise?
If temperature issues are observed, describe the actions taken
