Caterpillar Engine C-10

Ensure the engine cannot be started during maintenance

Allow engine components to cool before maintenance

Disconnect the unit injector enable circuit connector

Electronic Unit Injector - Inspect/Adjust

Inspect electronic unit injector for proper adjustment

Adjust electronic unit injector preload

Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust

Inspect engine valve lash for proper adjustment

Check the starting motor for proper operation.

Check and clean the electrical connections of the starting motor.

Turbocharger Inspection and Cleaning

Remove and inspect the exhaust outlet and air inlet piping for oil presence.

Clean the interior of the pipes to prevent dirt entry during reassembly.

Turn the compressor and turbine wheels by hand to ensure they turn freely.

Inspect the compressor and turbine wheels for contact with the turbocharger housing.

Check the compressor wheel for cleanliness and signs of oil.

Air Starting Motor Lubricator Oil Level - Check

Check the oil level in the lubricator bowl

Is the air supply to the lubricator OFF?

Remove the plug and add oil to the lubricator bowl if necessary

Is the fuel supply to the engine OFF?

Turn adjustment knob clockwise until it locks

Turn adjustment knob counterclockwise for 1/4 turns

Belt Inspection and Initial Check

Inspect the belts for wear and cracking

Replace belts if worn or damaged

Apply 110 N (25 lb ft) of force midway between the pulleys and measure belt deflection

Is the belt deflection between 9 mm (0.35 inch) and 15 mm (0.59 inch)?

Is the engine equipped with a refrigerant compressor?

Belt Adjustment for Engines without Refrigerant Compressor

Remove the core. Refer to the Service Manual for the procedure.

Turn the aftercooler core upside-down to remove debris.

Back flush the core with cleaner. Use recommended concentration of cleaner.

Steam clean the core to remove residue and flush the fins.

Wash the core with hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Dry the core with compressed air. Ensure air pressure is less than 205 kPa (30 psi).

Inspect the core for cleanliness and pressure test it. Repair if necessary.

Install the core. Refer to the Service Manual for the procedure.
