Main Bearings Removal
Preparation and Safety
Follow instructions in 'CAUTION' on Page 5-2. Remove coupling spacer or otherwise lockout.
Remove the top cover.
Bearing Cap Removal
Remove the cap screws from main (journal) bearing cap #1. Pull the cap straight up to prevent damage to the dowel fit.
If the cap is tight, use a Bearing Cap Puller as illustrated in Figure 5-13 on Page 5-17.
Bearing Shell Removal
Attach clean nylon lifting straps around the crankshaft and lift slightly to take some of the weight off the bearings.
Remove the shell from the main bearing cap.

Crosshead Pin and Connecting Rod Inspection
Check crosshead pin to crosshead pin bore and connecting rod bushing bore
Check for excessive wear in the auxiliary end drive chain tightener
Check for excessive ring groove wear in pistons
Chain Sprocket Removal
Examine the sprocket for signs of wear
Drilling the Sprocket Hub
Drill a hole in the sprocket hub parallel to the shaft centerline
Mark the drill with tape
Relieve the shrink by drilling and use hammer and chisel
Connecting Rod Bushing Replacement
Inspection and Preparation
Check crosshead pin to connecting rod bushing clearance
Inspect the pin for wear and replace if necessary
Bushing Removal
File or hack saw the existing bushing to reduce tightness
File or saw across the length of the bushing to within 1/32 inch (1 mm) of its radial thickness
Ensure no damage to the connecting rod bore
New Bushing Installation
Cool the new bushing in a 95% alcohol solution with dry ice
Main Bearings Check
Pre-Check Instructions
Ensure main bearing caps are not removed unless replacing bearings.
Main Bearing Wear Check
Determine main bearing wear by checking the following
Measure main bearing vertical jack clearances using dial indicators.
Turn an adjacent throw up to the highest position.
Place lifting strap completely around the crankshaft at the adjacent web and attach strap to a crane or a long pry bar.
Install a magnetic stand on the top of the main bearing cap, with a needle type dial indicator placed against the top of the crankshaft web of the adjacent turned up throw.
Push down and set indicator to zero.
