Ensure all pressure in the chamber is vented through appropriate openings or connections.

Lock out or make non-operational the driving means (motor, turbine, engine, etc.).

Identify the liquid the pump has been handling and obtain the material safety data sheet (MSDS).

Mark the head and casing for proper reassembly.

Remove the head from the pump, keeping the relief valve attached if present.

Remove any flush lines going to the mechanical seal.

Ensure the pump is turned off and cooled down before starting lubrication.

Gather necessary tools and materials, including a handgun and multi-purpose grease, NLGI #2.

Apply external lubrication slowly with a handgun to all lubrication fittings.

Ensure not to over-grease the fittings.
