Operation Testing
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing.
Ensure multiple power sources are checked and disconnected.
Preparation
Remove unit wiring from disconnect switch.
Wire a test cord to the disconnect switch.
Testing Procedure
Ensure protective terminal cover is in place.
Connect the leads to the compressor terminals
High Efficiency Motor Check
Check for 230 volts to the motor connections L and N using a voltmeter
Is 230 volts present at the motor connections L and N?
Check the line voltage circuit to the motor if 230 volts is not present
Check for 24 volts from terminal C to either terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 using a voltmeter
Is 24 volts present from terminal C to the selected terminal?
Check 24 volt circuit to motor if no voltage is present
Determine if the motor needs replacement
Motor Replacement Guidelines
Ensure the belly band is between the vents on the motor
Subcooling Check
Preparation
Attach an accurate thermometer or thermocouple type temperature tester to the liquid line as it leaves the condensing unit.
Install a high side pressure gauge on the high side (liquid) service valve at the front of the unit.
Data Recording
Record the gauge pressure of the liquid line.
Record the temperature of the liquid line.
Reference Check
Review the technical information manual or specification sheet for the model being serviced to obtain the design subcooling.
Enter the design subcooling value from the technical manual.
Low Pressure Control Check
Pressure Control Settings Verification
Enter the current pressure in the suction line
Select the type of system
Is the cut-out pressure approximately 21 PSIG for heat pumps or 55 PSIG for air conditioners?
Is the cut-in pressure approximately 50 PSIG for heat pumps or 95 PSIG for air conditioners?
Continuity Test
Test for continuity using a VOM
Is the continuity test result as expected?
Replacement Decision
Unloader Testing
Compressor Current Measurement
Measure compressor current while operating the system
Did the compressor amperage change by at least 25%?
Unloader Solenoid Click Test
Shut unit off
Apply 18 to 28 volt ac to the unloader molded plug leads and listen for a click as the solenoid pulls in
Remove power and listen for another click as the unloader returns to its original position
Unloader Coil Resistance Measurement
Shut off power and remove the control circuit molded plug from the compressor
