Contactor And Relays Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Coil Testing
Remove the leads from the holding coil
Test across the coil terminals using an ohmmeter
Does the coil test continuous?
Checking Contactor Contacts - Single Phase
Disconnect the wire leads from the terminal (T) side of the contactor
Energize the contactor with power ON
High Efficiency Motor Check
Check for 230 volts to the motor connections L and N
Is 230 volts present at the motor connections L and N?
Check the line voltage circuit to the motor if 230 volts is not present
Check for 24 volts from terminal C to either terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Is 24 volts present from terminal C to the selected terminal?
Check 24 volt circuit to motor if no voltage is present
Determine if the motor needs replacement
Ensure the belly band is between the vents on the motor when replacing
Ensure the wiring has the proper drip loop to prevent condensate from entering the motor
Reversing Valve And Solenoid Check
Initial System Check
Start the system and switch operation from COOLING to HEATING cycle.
Did the valve change its position?
Voltage Testing at Valve Coil Terminals
Test the voltage (24V) at the valve coil terminals while the system is on the COOLING cycle.
Is voltage registered at the coil terminals?
Thermostat and Wiring Check (Legacy Systems)
Is the system wired in legacy mode?
Check the operation of the thermostat and the continuity of the connecting wiring from the 'O' terminal of the thermostat to the unit.
Subcooling Check
Preparation
Attach an accurate thermometer or thermocouple type temperature tester to the liquid line as it leaves the condensing unit.
Install a high side pressure gauge on the high side (liquid) service valve at the front of the unit.
Data Recording
Record the gauge pressure of the liquid line.
Record the temperature of the liquid line.
Reference Check
Review the technical information manual or specification sheet for the model being serviced to obtain the design subcooling.
Compare the hi-pressure reading to the "Required Liquid Line Temperature" chart and note the required liquid line temperature.
Refrigeration System Maintenance
Safety Precautions
Remove refrigerant charge properly before applying heat to the system.
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing.
Ensure no system is opened under vacuum.
Preparation
Plug or cap all openings.
Remove all burrs and clean brazing surfaces with sand cloth or paper.
Clean inside of all new tubing to remove oils and pipe chips.
