Operation Testing
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Preparation
Remove unit wiring from disconnect switch
Wire a test cord to the disconnect switch
Testing Setup
Ensure protective terminal cover is in place
Connect the common, start, and run clips to the respective leads on the compressor terminals
Connect good capacitors of the right MFD and voltage rating into the circuit
Capacitance Check

Discharge capacitor through a 20 to 30 OHM resistor before handling

Calculate the capacitance (MFD) using the formula: 2650 X Amperage / Voltage
Expansion Valve Operation Check
Remove the remote bulb of the expansion valve from the suction line
Start the system and cool the bulb in a container of ice water
Observe the suction pressure and temperature while cooling the bulb
Enter the suction pressure while cooling the bulb
Enter the suction temperature while cooling the bulb
Warm the bulb in your hand
Observe the suction pressure and temperature while warming the bulb
Enter the suction pressure while warming the bulb

Defrost Control Testing
Legacy Models
Ensure power is ON and unit is not running
Jumper defrost thermostat by placing a jumper wire across the terminals 'DFT' and 'R'/'R-DFT' at defrost control board
Connect jumper across test pins on defrost control board
Set thermostat to call for heating. System should go into defrost within 21 seconds
Immediately remove jumper from test pins
Check for voltage across terminals 'C & O'. Meter should read 24 volts
Check for voltage across fan terminals DF1 and DF2 on the board. You should read line voltage (208-230 VAC) indicating the relay is open in the defrost mode
Check for voltage across 'W'/'W2' & 'C' terminals on the board. You should read 24 volts
Capacitor Check
Run Capacitor Inspection
Verify the wiring of the run capacitor
Is the capacitor reducing line current and improving torque characteristics?
Start Capacitor and Scroll Compressor Check
Is a hard start kit installed?
Verify the hard start kit
Is the discharge check valve functioning properly?
