Crankcase Heater Testing
Safety Precautions
Disconnect ALL power before servicing
Heater Lead Disconnection
Disconnect the heater lead in wires
Heater Continuity Check
Using an ohmmeter, check heater continuity
Is the heater continuity test continuous?
Replace heater if continuity test is not continuous
Heater Specifications
Ground Testing
Initial Safety Checks
Has the circuit protective device tripped?
Check the circuit protective device rating against the equipment nameplate
Power Disconnection
Disconnect all power to the unit, ensuring all power legs are open
Compressor Lead Disconnection
Do not remove protective terminal cover
Disconnect the three leads going to the compressor terminals at the nearest point to the compressor
Resistance Testing
Resistance Check
Safety Warning
Disconnect all power sources
Discharge capacitor through a 20 to 30 OHM resistor before handling
Remove wire leads from the capacitor
Set an ohmmeter on its highest ohm scale
Connect the leads to the capacitor and check the condition
Does the indicator swing to zero and slowly return to infinity?
Does the indicator swing to zero and stop there?
Is there no reading on the indicator?
Fan And Blower Motor Check
PSC Motors Check
Remove the motor leads from its respective connection points and capacitor (if applicable).
Check the continuity between each of the motor leads.
Touch one probe of the ohmmeter to the motor frame (ground) and the other probe in turn to each lead.
If the windings do not test continuous or a reading is obtained from lead to ground, replace the motor.
ECM Motors Check
Disconnect the 5-pin connector from the motor.
Check for line voltage at terminals #4 & #5 at the power connector using a volt meter.
If no voltage is present, check the unit for incoming power and the control board.
High Efficiency Motor Check
Check for 230 volts to the motor connections L and N
Is 230 volts present at the motor connections L and N?
Check the line voltage circuit to the motor if 230 volts is not present
Check for 24 volts from terminal C to either terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Is 24 volts present from terminal C to the selected terminal?
Check 24 volt circuit to motor if no voltage is present
Determine if the motor needs replacement
Ensure the belly band is between the vents on the motor when replacing
Ensure the wiring has the proper drip loop to prevent condensate from entering the motor
