Resistance Testing
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Ensure fuse, circuit breaker, and ground fault protective device have not tripped
Preparation
Remove the leads from the compressor terminals
Review warnings S-17 before removing compressor terminal cover
Testing Continuity
Test continuity between terminals SR, C-R, and C-S on single phase units
Test continuity between terminals T1, T2, and T3 on 3 phase units
Contactor And Relays Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Coil Testing
Remove the leads from the holding coil
Test across the coil terminals using an ohmmeter
Checking Contactor Contacts - Single Phase
Disconnect the wire leads from the terminal (T) side of the contactor
Energize the contactor with power ON
Test across terminals using a voltmeter
Capacitance Check
Safety Precautions
Discharge capacitor through a 20 to 30 OHM resistor before handling
Measurement
Enter the amperage reading
Enter the voltage reading
Calculation
Calculate the capacitance (MFD) using the formula: 2650 X Amperage / Voltage
Expansion Valve Operation Check
Preparation
Remove the remote bulb of the expansion valve from the suction line
Cooling the Bulb
Start the system
Cool the bulb in a container of ice water
Record the suction pressure after cooling the bulb
Record the suction temperature after cooling the bulb
Warming the Bulb
Warm the bulb in your hand
Cycle Protector Check
Some models feature a solid state, delay-on make after break time delay relay installed in the low voltage circuit. This control is used to prevent short cycling of the compressor under certain operating conditions.
The component is normally closed (R1 to Y1 ). A power interruption will break circuit (R1 to Y1 ) for approximately three minutes before resetting.
1. Remove wire from Y1 terminal.
2. Wait for approximately four (4) minutes if machine was running.
With power ON:
WARNING
Line Voltage now present.
1. Apply 24 VAC to terminals R1 and R2.
2. Should read 24 VAC at terminals Y1 and Y2.
