Temperature Sensor Testing
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Sensor Disconnection
Disconnect power to the air conditioner or heat pump
Disconnect the sensor from the unitary (UC) control
Sensor Testing
Connect an ohmmeter across the sensor terminals and record the resistance
Is the sensor resistance within the valid range (9kΩ to 11kΩ)?
Replace the sensor if it is open, shorted, or outside the valid resistance range
Fan And Blower Motor Check
PSC Motors Check
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing.
Remove the motor leads from its respective connection points and capacitor (if applicable).
Check the continuity between each of the motor leads.
Touch one probe of the ohmmeter to the motor frame (ground) and the other probe in turn to each lead.
If the windings do not test continuous or a reading is obtained from lead to ground, replace the motor.
ECM Motors Check
Disconnect the 5-pin connector from the motor.
Check for line voltage at terminals #4 & #5 at the power connector using a volt meter.
Defrost Thermostat Testing
Temperature Test Lead Installation
Install a thermocouple type temperature test lead on the tube adjacent to the defrost control.
Insulate the lead point of contact.
Contact Closure Temperature Check
Record the temperature at which Part # 0130M00009P closes its contacts (2 and 2.5 ton units).
Does Part # 0130M00009P close at 34°F ± 5°F?
Record the temperature at which Part # 0130M00001P or B1370803 closes its contacts (3 thru 5 ton units).
Does Part # 0130M00001P or B1370803 close at 31°F ± 3°F?
Record the temperature at which Part # 0130M00085 closes its contacts (units with 5 mm coils).
Heater Fuse Link Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power before servicing
Fuse Link Inspection
Remove heater element assembly to expose fuse link
Test across the fuse link for continuity using an ohmmeter
Replacement and Analysis
Is the fuse link open?
Replace the fuse link if necessary
Determine and describe the reason for fuse link failure
Heater Element Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Disassembly and Inspection
Disassemble and remove the heating element(s)
Visually inspect the heater assembly for any breaks in the wire or broken insulators
Testing and Replacement
Test the element for continuity using an ohmmeter
Is the element functioning properly?
Reassembly
