Voltage Check
Preparation
Remove outer case, control panel cover, etc., from unit being tested
Voltage Measurement with Power On
Ensure line voltage is present
Measure the voltage across terminals L1 and L2 of the contactor for the condensing unit or at the field connections for the air handler or heaters
Measure the voltage across the L1 and L2 lugs on the unitary (UC) control for ComfortNet Ready Condensing Units
Diagnosis and Repair
Is there a voltage reading?
Describe any issues found (e.g., open wiring, open fuse(s), no power) and repairs made
Contactor And Relays Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Coil Testing
Remove the leads from the holding coil
Test across the coil terminals using an ohmmeter
Checking Contactor Contacts - Single Phase
Disconnect the wire leads from the terminal (T) side of the contactor
Energize the contactor with power ON
Test across terminals L2 - T1 using a voltmeter
Heater Limit Control Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power before servicing
Limit Control Testing
Remove the wiring from the control terminals
Test for continuity across the normally closed contacts using an ohmmeter
Is there continuity across the contacts?
Are the limits cool before testing?
Replacement Decision
Is the control open?
Heater Fuse Link Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power before servicing
Fuse Link Inspection
Remove heater element assembly to expose fuse link
Test across the fuse link for continuity using an ohmmeter
Is there a reading on the ohmmeter?
Fuse Link Replacement
Is the fuse link open?
Replace the fuse link if necessary
Fan And Blower Motor Check
PSC Motors Check
Remove the motor leads from its respective connection points and capacitor (if applicable)
Check the continuity between each of the motor leads
Touch one probe of the ohmmeter to the motor frame (ground) and the other probe in turn to each lead
If the windings do not test continuous or a reading is obtained from lead to ground, replace the motor
ECM Motors Check
Disconnect the 5-pin connector from the motor
Check for line voltage at terminals #4 & #5 at the power connector
If no voltage is present, check the unit for incoming power and the control board
