Coupling Alignment Check
4.8 Final shaft alignment check
Rotate the shaft several times by hand to ensure there is no binding and all parts are free
Recheck the coupling alignment to ensure no pipe strain
6.1.2 Periodic inspection (semi-annual)
Check the coupling for correct alignment
Inspect for worn driving elements
4.5.4 Alignment criteria for MFC pumps
Measure Total Indicator Reading (TIR) for Woods type coupling - Parallel Misalignment
Measure Total Indicator Reading (TIR) for Woods type coupling - Total Angular Misalignment
Pump Startup Check
5.1 Pre-commissioning procedure
Ensure the following pre-commissioning checks are completed
Fill pump bearings with recommended lubricant
Check all vent connections for complete filling of the pump
Verify the direction of rotation of the pump (Coupling spacer dismantled)
Ensure pump rotor and shaft seal are in correct axial position
Check readiness of all auxiliary systems (seal system, lubrication system) for startup
Verify all pipe work is connected correctly and absolutely tight
Ensure suction valve is open and discharge valve is closed or partially open as required
6 Monthly Pump Periodic Inspection
6.1.2 Periodic inspection (semi-annual)
Check the stuffing box
Clean and oil the gland studs and nuts
Replace the packing if necessary
Enter the pump running hours from records
Should the bearings be inspected and re-lubricated?
Check foundation bolts for security of attachment and corrosion
Does the bearing lubricant require changing?
Check the coupling for correct alignment and worn driving elements
Gland Packing Maintenance
6.1.8 Maintenance of packing
Ensure correct packing materials are used
Remove the stuffing box gland
Remove old packing and seal cage halves and clean the stuffing box
Is the packing of the correct type and size?
Measure the stuffing box to determine the proper length of packing
Cut packing slightly shorter than measured length
Insert each ring of packing separately and seat it firmly
Stagger the rings so that successive joints are 90° to 180° angles apart
Wearing Ring Maintenance
Adjusting wearing ring gap
Remove rotor and reset seal if necessary for pumps with mechanical seals.
Determine the actual ring gap.
Is the desired ring gap achievable with current shim pack?
Restore or replace wearing surfaces if necessary.
Loosen the 4 screws (or nuts) between the bearing frame and the stuffing box head.
Break the shim joint by tightening the two adjusting bolts and remove the shims.
Adjust shim pack thickness to achieve desired wearing gap.
Select shim stock colour code for adjustment.
