6.7.3 Bearing installation and removal
Ensure proper fit is maintained during bearing installation
Was a pulling device used to remove bearings from the shaft?
Support the bearing cone with a split ring and press out the shaft using an arbor press, if applicable
Select the method used for mounting a bearing on the pump shaft
Heat the bearing to a uniform temperature
Quickly mount the heated bearing on the shaft
Apply force using an arbor press if the alternate method is used
Ensure the cone is never cocked when forcing a bearing onto a shaft
Pump Temperature Check
Normal Vibration Levels, Alarm and Trip
Measure the vibration velocity of the motor (unfiltered, r.m.s.)
Is the vibration velocity within the normal range for the motor's power rating?
Calculate and record the alarm value (N × 1.25) for the motor's vibration velocity.
Calculate and record the trip value (N × 2.0) for the motor's vibration velocity.
Pump and Motor Bearings Temperature
Record the bearing temperature (t).
Record the ambient temperature (ta).
Estimate and record the likely maximum ambient temperature (tb).

Is there visible leakage from the gland?
Ensure gland nuts are finger-tight only.
Leakage and Temperature Check
Is leakage taking place soon after the stuffing box is pressurized?
Is the gland adjusted evenly for visible leakage and concentric alignment?
Is there any sign of overheating?
Overheating Procedure
If overheating occurs, was the pump stopped and allowed to cool?

Check the stuffing box
Clean and oil the gland studs and nuts
Replace the packing if necessary

Should the bearings be inspected and re-lubricated based on hourly usage?

Does the bearing lubricant require changing based on hourly usage?

Verify pre-greased components

Check the bearing frame cavities for grease and add grease as necessary
Remove the grease fittings or pipe plug closest to the cover after start-up to allow excess grease to flow out
Monitor the bearing temperatures until they return to normal
Investigate any marked increase in bearing temperature after normal operation
