Mechanical Seal Inspection
Pumps fitted with mechanical seal
Ensure no adjustment is made to the mechanical seal
Check for any initial leakage
Run in the pump mechanical seal using clean liquid before pumping dirty liquids
Start external flush or quench before running the pump
Allow external flush or quench to flow after the pump has stopped
Ensure the mechanical seal is never run dry
Mechanical seals
Verify no adjustment is possible for the mechanical seal
Gland Packing Maintenance
6.1.8 Maintenance of packing
Ensure the correct materials are used
Remove the stuffing box gland
Remove old packing and seal cage halves, then clean the stuffing box
Verify the packing is of correct type and size
Measure the stuffing box to determine the proper length of packing
Cut packing slightly shorter than measured length
Insert each ring of packing separately and seat it firmly
Stagger the rings so that successive joints are 90° to 180° angles apart
Coupling Alignment Check
4.8 Final shaft alignment check
Rotate the shaft several times by hand to ensure there is no binding and all parts are free
Recheck the coupling alignment to ensure no pipe strain
6.1.2 Periodic inspection (semi-annual)
Check the coupling for correct alignment
Inspect for worn driving elements
4.5.4 Alignment criteria for MFC pumps
Check Total Indicator Reading (TIR) for Woods type coupling
Check Total Indicator Reading (TIR) for all metal flexible type coupling
1 Yearly Pump Bearing Lubrication Oil Change
Periodic inspection (semi-annual)
Ensure the maximum time between cleaning and lubrication change is one year.
Determine if the environment and conditions require shorter frequency of maintenance.
Complete cleaning during a major overhaul
Dismantle the pump.
Use a brush and wash out the housing with hot oil or non-toxic solvent.
Flush the housing with light mineral oil to prevent rust.
Remove solid particles with a brush dipped in hot oil while gently spinning the bearing.
Is there badly oxidized grease present?
Pump Temperature Check
Normal Vibration Levels, Alarm and Trip
Measure the vibration velocity of the pump motor (unfiltered, r.m.s.)
Is the vibration velocity within the normal range for the motor power?
Calculate and record the alarm value (N × 1.25)
Calculate and record the trip value (N × 2.0)
Pump and Motor Bearings Temperature
Record the bearing temperature (t)
Record the ambient temperature (ta)
Estimate and record the likely maximum ambient temperature (tb)
