Wearing Ring Maintenance
Adjusting wearing ring gap
Remove rotor and reset seal if necessary for pumps with mechanical seals.
Determine the actual ring gap.
Is the desired ring gap achievable with current shim pack?
Restore or replace wearing surfaces if necessary.
Loosen the 4 screws (or nuts) between the bearing frame and the stuffing box head.
Break the shim joint by tightening the two adjusting bolts and remove the shims.
Adjust shim pack thickness to achieve desired wearing gap.
Select shim stock colour code for adjustment.
Mechanical Seal Maintenance
6.1.9 Maintenance of mechanical seal
Ensure all parts are in place
6.1.9.1 General instructions
Read all seal instructions before installing the seal
Ensure no scratches or marring on the lapped seal faces
Note any issues with rotary to stationary seal faces
6.1.9.2 Preparing the pump
Check concentricity between the bore of stuffing box and shaft sleeve
Are sleeve diameter and stuffing box bore dimensions correct?
500 Hourly Pump Bearing Lubrication
5.2.4.2 Recommended grease fill quantities
Verify grease fill quantities for Frame 8H
6.1.10.2 Grease lubrication
Connect grease gun to the nipple
Press grease into the bearing housing until it appears in the gap between the housing and shaft
Measure the operating temperature of the bearing
Is the temperature rise above ambient within 55 °C (131 °F)?
Is the combined maximum temperature within 95 °C (204 °F)?
Is there a continuously rising temperature or an abrupt temperature rise?
Shaft Sleeve Maintenance
Shaft Sleeve Removal
Verify heating requirements for shaft sleeve removal
Was the sleeve removed successfully after heating?
Was the sleeve cracked and removed mechanically?
Mounting of Shaft Sleeve
Clean the shaft and shaft sleeve thoroughly
Remove oil or grease from mating surfaces with a non-toxic solvent
Did the solvent dry completely?
Apply Loctite type RC/680 or equivalent to the sleeve inside diameter and shaft O.D.
Mechanical Seal Inspection
5.8.3 Pumps fitted with mechanical seal
Ensure no adjustment is made to the mechanical seal
Is there any initial leakage from the seal?
Was the pump mechanical seal run in using clean liquid before pumping dirty liquids?
Start external flush or quench before running the pump
Allow external flush or quench to flow after the pump has stopped
Confirm the mechanical seal was not run dry at any time
6.1.11 Mechanical seals
Is the leakage level of the mechanical seal acceptable?
