Lubrication — How to properly determine the oil service intervals

Check ambient temperature and discharge temperature

Determine oil viscosity grade based on temperature

Verify oil temperature does not exceed 195°F (90°C)

Use Roots synthetic oil of correct viscosity

Remove the breather plug (25) and the oil overflow plug (21)

Fill the reservoir up to the overflow hole

Ensure the reservoir is not overfilled

Verify conditions for oil service intervals

Select the oil viscosity grade to use

Is the specified and recommended oil Roots synthetic oil of correct viscosity?

Remove the oil overflow plug (21)

Fill the reservoir up to the overflow hole

Place the breather plug back into its hole

Lubrication — For Units with grease lubricated drive end

Verify applicable speed and operating hours

Use specified NLGI #2 premium grade aluminium complex grease, Roots P/N T20019002

Ensure no lithium based grease is used

Check lubrication system on drive shaft end bearings

Ensure hydraulic pressure relief fittings are in place

Verify restriction plug and metering orifice are functioning

Slowly force new lubricant into each drive end bearing housing until traces of clean grease come out of the relief fitting

Have clearances and timing been set before coating new parts?

Apply cleaner with a soaked rag for new uncoated surfaces

Set cleaner for 1 to 2 minutes before wiping off

Avoid cleaning surfaces not to be coated

Wipe off with a clean, dry rag for spot repair or renewal

Shake the can well until the ball rattles freely, then continue for at least five minutes

Measure vibration at bearing locations

Is all pass vibration 0.45 in/sec-pk or less?

Is all pass vibration greater than 0.45 but 1.0 or less AND discrete frequency 0.45 or less at any frequency?

Is all pass vibration greater than 0.45 but 1.0 or less AND discrete frequency greater than 0.45 at any frequency?

Is all pass vibration greater than 1.0 AND discrete frequency less than 1.0?

Is all pass vibration greater than 1.0 AND discrete frequency greater than 1.0?
