Initial Pump Startup Check
5.1.1 Prepare for startup
Confirm completion of initial procedures
Verify mechanical seal lubrication and piping connection
Verify operation and regulation of cooling, heating, and flushing lines
Verify connections to driver and starting device match wiring diagram
Verify voltage, phase, and frequency on motor nameplate agree with line current
Rotate shaft manually to ensure impellers are not binding
Verify driver bearings are properly lubricated and check oil level in housing
Verify auxiliary seal components are properly vented

Is the packing adjustment necessary based on conditions?
6.2.1 Adjust the packing when leaking is excessive
Tighten the gland nuts one-quarter turn with the pump in operation
Has the leakage decreased to two drops per second?
Shut down the pump if leakage continues to exceed two drops per second
Allow the packing to compress until the gland is about to contact the upper face of the stuffing box
Remove the split gland, add one extra packing ring, and readjust

Check impeller vanes for grooves deeper than 1.6 mm or wear more than 0.8 mm
Inspect vane edges for cracks, pitting, or corrosion damage
Remove the Bowl and Impeller Wear Rings
Remove setscrews or grind off tack welds if present
Cut two V-shaped grooves on the bowl or impeller wear ring 180° apart
Knock the end of one half of the ring in and pry the ring out
Machine the wear ring off for high-alloy materials
