Thrust pot lubrication guidelines

Verify that pumps are shipped without oil

Ensure oil-lubricated bearings are lubricated at the job site

Refer to Thrust Pot IOM for lubrication requirements

Check oil level when not operating

Measure oil level in the sight gauge

Is the oil level between 0.635 to 0.3175 mm (1/8 in. to 1/4 in.) from the top of the oil sight gauge?

Is the oil level lower than the required level as indicated on the oil sight gauge?

Thrust pot lubrication guidelines

Flush the oil reservoir to remove all grit particles in the oil reservoir sump.

Use the specified type of oil for flushing the reservoir.

Note any specific instructions from the Thrust Pot IOM for oil changing requirements.

2.4 Pump and bowl assembly storage requirements

Rotate the shaft and bowl assembly shaft counterclockwise at least 3 turns

Ensure the shaft is not left in a previous or extreme position

Check that the shaft rotates freely

Inspect the unit to ensure all preservatives are intact

Seal all pipe threads and flanged pipe covers with tape

Renew rust preventative on all uncoated surfaces

2.4.1 Extended long-term storage for partially assembled pumps

Allow time for seal adjustment if slight leaks occur at start-up

Run pump continuously if leaks decrease while running

Inspect for constant leaks during operation

Check for secondary seal damage or warped/cracked seal faces if constant leaks occur

Replacement guidelines — Mechanical seal checks

Check shaft or sleeve for pits, burrs, or sharp edges

Polish shaft or sleeve with fine emery cloth to remove burrs and sharp edges

6.2 Adjust and replace the packing

Check conditions for packing adjustment

Is the leakage rate less than one drop per second?

Is the environment Ex-classified?

6.2.1 Adjust the packing when leaking is excessive

Tighten the gland nuts one-quarter turn with the pump in operation

Have the leaks decreased to a steady state of two drops per second?

Shut down the pump if leaks continue to exceed two drops per second

Allow the packing to compress until the gland is about to contact the upper face of the stuffing box
