Initial Pump Startup Check
5.1.1 Prepare for startup
Confirm completion of initial procedures
Verify mechanical seal lubrication and piping connection
Verify operation and regulation of cooling, heating, and flushing lines
Verify connections to driver and starting device match wiring diagram
Verify voltage, phase, and frequency on motor nameplate agree with line current
Rotate shaft manually to ensure impellers are not binding
Verify driver bearings are properly lubricated and check oil level in housing
Verify auxiliary seal components are properly vented
Mechanical Seal Inspection
Mechanical seal leaks
Allow time for seal adjustment if slight leaks occur at start-up
Run pump continuously if leaks decrease while running
Inspect for constant leaks during operation
Check for secondary seal damage or warped/cracked seal faces if constant leaks occur
Replacement guidelines — Mechanical seal checks
Check shaft or sleeve for pits, burrs, or sharp edges
Polish shaft or sleeve with fine emery cloth to remove burrs and sharp edges
1 Monthly Storage Pump Maintenance
2.4 Pump and bowl assembly storage requirements
Rotate the shaft and bowl assembly shaft counterclockwise at least 3 turns
Ensure the shaft is not left in a previous or extreme position
Check that the shaft rotates freely
2.4 Pump and bowl assembly storage requirements
Inspect the unit to ensure all preservatives are intact
Seal all pipe threads and flanged pipe covers with tape
Renew rust preventative on all uncoated surfaces
2.4.1 Extended long-term storage for partially assembled pumps
Wear Ring Replacement
Replacement guidelines — Impeller replacement
Replace impeller vanes if grooved deeper than 1.6 mm | 1/16 in. or worn evenly more than 0.8 mm | 1/32 in.
Replace vane edges if cracks, pitting, or corrosion damage are observed.
Remove the bowl and impeller wear rings
Remove locking methods from wear rings
Cut two V-shaped grooves on the bowl or impeller wear ring approximately 180° apart using a diamond-point chisel.
Knock the end of one half of the ring in and pry the ring out using a chisel or drift punch.
For high-alloy materials, set up the bowl or the impeller in a lathe and machine the wear ring off.
Installing the turbine bowl and impeller wear ring
Packing Adjustment
6.2 Adjust and replace the packing
Check conditions for packing adjustment
Is the packing in an Ex-classified environment?
Ensure packing is not over-tightened to less than one drop per second
6.2.1 Adjust the packing when leaking is excessive
Measure leakage rate (drops per second)
Is leakage rate more than two drops per second?
Tighten the gland nuts one-quarter turn with pump in operation
Has the leakage decreased to two drops per second?
