Turn the furnace on at the thermostat
Wait a few minutes for any dislodged dust to settle
Check the burner flames for the following characteristics
Are the flames stable, quiet, soft and blue with slightly orange tips?
Do the flames extend directly outward from the burner ports without curling downward, floating or lifting off the ports?

Wait for at least fifteen minutes after the heating cycle has started

Clock the gas meter to determine the time for one complete revolution of the cubic foot dial
Enter the time in seconds for one complete revolution

Enter the number of cubic feet of gas consumed per hour
Enter the calorific value of the gas (BTU per cubic foot)
