Capacitance Check
Safety Precautions
Discharge capacitor through a 20 to 30 OHM resistor before handling
Measurement
Enter the amperage reading
Enter the voltage reading
Calculation
Calculate the capacitance using the formula: Capacitance (MFD) = 2650 X Amperage / Voltage
Voltage Check
Preparation
Remove outer case, control panel cover, etc., from unit being tested.
Voltage Measurement with Power On
Ensure line voltage is present.
Measure the voltage across terminals L1 and L2 of the contactor for the condensing unit or at the field connections for the air handler or heaters.
Measure the voltage across the L1 and L2 lugs on the unitary (UC) control for ComfortNet Ready Condensing Units.
Diagnosis and Repair
Is there a voltage reading?
Describe any issues found (e.g., open wiring, open fuse(s), no power).
Transformer And Control Circuit Check
Safety Precautions
Disconnect all power sources before servicing or installing
Verify multiple power sources are disconnected
Access Transformer
Remove control panel cover to gain access to transformer
Voltage Check
Check voltage across secondary voltage side of transformer (R to C) using a voltmeter
Is there voltage across the secondary side?
Fault Diagnosis
Thermostat Check
Thermostat Cooling Check
Check for 24 volts at thermostat wires C and Y in the condensing unit control panel
Is there voltage at thermostat wires C and Y?
Describe any issues found with the thermostat, wiring, or external transformer source
Check the continuity of the thermostat and wiring
Describe repairs or replacements made
Indoor Blower Motor Check
Set fan selector switch at thermostat to 'ON' position
Check for 24 volts at wires C and G
Expansion Valve Operation Check
Preparation
Remove the remote bulb of the expansion valve from the suction line
Cooling the Bulb
Start the system
Cool the bulb in a container of ice water
Record the suction pressure after cooling the bulb
Record the suction temperature after cooling the bulb
Warming the Bulb
Warm the bulb in your hand
