Resistance Check
Safety Warning
Discharge capacitor and remove wire leads
Set an ohmmeter on its highest ohm scale and connect the leads to the capacitor
Check capacitor condition
Post inspection cleanup
Clean the area
Dispose of waste
Reversing Valve And Solenoid Check
Initial System Check
Start the system and switch operation from COOLING to HEATING cycle.
Did the valve change its position?
Voltage Testing at Valve Coil Terminals
Test the voltage (24V) at the valve coil terminals while the system is on the COOLING cycle.
Is voltage registered at the coil terminals?
Thermostat and Wiring Check (Legacy Systems)
Check the operation of the thermostat.
Check the continuity of the connecting wiring from the 'O' terminal of the thermostat to the unit.
Defrost Control Testing
Legacy Models
Ensure power is ON and unit is not running
Jumper defrost thermostat by placing a jumper wire across the terminals 'DFT' and 'R'/'R-DFT' at defrost control board
Connect jumper across test pins on defrost control board
Set thermostat to call for heating. System should go into defrost within 21 seconds
Immediately remove jumper from test pins
Check for voltage across terminals 'C & O'. Meter should read 24 volts
Check for voltage across fan terminals DF1 and DF2 on the board. You should read line voltage (208-230 VAC) indicating the relay is open in the defrost mode
Check for voltage across 'W'/'W2' & 'C' terminals on the board. You should read 24 volts
Fan And Blower Motor Check
PSC Motors Check
Remove the motor leads from its respective connection points and capacitor (if applicable).
Check the continuity between each of the motor leads.
Touch one probe of the ohmmeter to the motor frame (ground) and the other probe in turn to each lead.
Do the windings test continuous and no reading is obtained from lead to ground?
ECM Motors Check
Disconnect the 5-pin connector from the motor.
Check for line voltage at terminals #4 & #5 at the power connector using a volt meter.
Is line voltage present at terminals #4 & #5?
3-Phase Scroll Compressor Rotation Check
Pressure Verification
Install gauges on the compressor
Verify that the suction pressure drops
Verify that the discharge pressure increases
Sound Level Check
Listen for normal compressor sound levels
Describe any unusual sound levels observed
Amp Draw Verification
Record the amp draw from tabulated values
