Intake Pressure Switch Testing
Service Procedure XII — Intake Pressure Testing (models prior to serial "CF" only)
Check continuity through the normally closed intake pressure switch if the blower does not energize
Refer to the vent safety switch, exhaust pressure switch, or blower testing procedures if the intake pressure switch is not faulty
Check continuity through the switch if the purge LED does not illuminate within the expected time
Confirm the inlet tube pressure tap reads at least -1.2 in. W.C. using a manometer
Remove the hose from the intake pressure switch and restart the heater to see if the purge LED illuminates
Isolate the heater from the intake vent system and restart again to isolate a switch versus vent-system fault
Check whether the intake vent system is obstructed and clear any obstruction found
Call technical support if no cause is found
Thermostat Circuit Testing
Service Procedure I — Thermostat Circuit Testing
Error code 32:
Unplug electrical power to the water heater.
Check continuity of the wire harness to the sensor; resistance should be close to 0 ohms, replacing the harness if resistance exceeds 0.5 ohms or wires show damage.
If the harness is okay, check sensor resistance against the temperature/resistance table and replace the sensor if needed.
Restore power and run the heater through a heating cycle to verify proper operation, viewing sensor temperature when the burner shuts off.
Error code 65 (high water temperature):
Turn power off and draw water to cool the tank below 120°F.
Check that the sensor is fully inserted into the well and its clip is undamaged, and check the sensor wire for damage; replace the clip or sensor as needed, or check sensor resistance if both appear fine.
Hot Surface Igniter Testing
Service Procedure VII — Hot Surface Igniter Testing & Replacement
WARNING — 120-volt potential exposure; the igniter may be too hot to handle, so use caution.
Check the igniter's cold resistance
Is the igniter's cold resistance under 150 ohms?
Replace the hot surface igniter if resistance is not under 150 ohms
Check for 120VAC across the ignition module's igniter terminals during the warm-up period (igniter LED lit)
Is there 120VAC across the ignition module's igniter terminals?
Check the harness connection if voltage is absent
Replace the ignition module if the harness is good and voltage is absent
Anode Rod Inspection
Service Procedure XIV — Anode Inspection and Replacement
Turn off the water supply and drain the water heater
Disassemble the heater for access to anodes and flue baffles
Locate and remove the anode rods using a 1-1/16 in. hex socket
Visually inspect each anode rod for depletion
Apply thread sealing tape or compound and reinstall the anode rods
Restore the water supply and check for leaks
Repair any leaks found
Reinstall the collector cover
Blower Testing
Service Procedure V — Blower Testing & Replacement
Warning: 120-volt potential exposure; use caution making voltage checks.
Confirm the blower energizes when the thermostat calls for heat
Check for 120VAC across the terminal-block black and white wires
Check for 120VAC at the ignition module/control board and blower wiring
Repair or replace the harness or blower as indicated
Check if the blower energizes but seems weak
Check amp draw on the black blower-motor lead (should read 0.6–3.0 amps)
Confirm the blower wheel is secure on the motor shaft
