Blower Testing
Service Procedure V — Blower Testing & Replacement
Warning: 120-volt potential exposure; use caution making voltage checks.
Confirm the blower energizes when the thermostat calls for heat
Check for 120VAC across the terminal-block black and white wires
Check for 120VAC at the ignition module/control board and blower wiring
Repair or replace the harness or blower as indicated
Does the blower energize but seem weak?
Check amp draw on the black blower-motor lead (should read 0.6–3.0 amps)
Confirm the blower wheel is secure on the motor shaft
Combustion System Testing
Service Procedure II — Combustion System Testing
Observe burner operation through the sight glass
Verify minimum gas supply piping size
Confirm static inlet gas pressure is stable between 7 and 14 in. W.C.
Adjust or replace an inadequately sized regulator if pressure is unstable
For models with Hot Surface Ignition
Confirm the inlet gas pressure does not drop more than 2 in. W.C. during ignition
Check that the igniter glows through the sight glass during warm-up
Check for 120VAC at the ignition-module igniter terminals
Flame Sensor Testing
Service Procedure VIII — Flame Sensor Testing & Replacement
Safety Warning
Be cautious of 120-volt potential exposure and hot flame sensor
Flame Sensor Testing
Check for a minimum of 1 microamp during the 1.5-second flame-proving period
Is the flame-sensing circuit okay?
Check for expected 24VAC at ignition module/control board flame-establishing terminals
Call technical support if 24VAC is absent
With sensor disconnected, check for continuity to ground
Thermostat Circuit Testing
Service Procedure I — Thermostat Circuit Testing
Error code 32
Unplug electrical power to the water heater
Check continuity of the wire harness to the sensor
Is the resistance close to 0 ohms?
Replace the harness if resistance exceeds 0.5 ohms or wires show damage
Check sensor resistance against the temperature/resistance table
Replace the sensor if needed
Restore power and run the heater through a heating cycle
Vent Safety Switch Testing
Service Procedure XIII — Vent Safety Switch Testing and Replacement
Warnings
120-volt potential exposure; use caution making voltage checks.
Confirm the exhaust collector compartment is not overheating (350°F) before resetting the switch; call technical support if there is evidence of overheating.
Vent Safety Switch Testing
Locate the harness connection and check continuity through the grey lead wires of the heater-side harness; call technical support if there is none.
If continuity is present, depress the reset button on the high-limit switch and check for continuity across it, replacing the vent safety switch if there is none.
Reset the heater and observe a heating cycle to confirm the switch does not reopen before 350°F is reached; replace the switch if it opens prematurely, and do not operate the heater if temperature exceeds 350°F without contacting technical support.
