Exhaust and Blocked Vent Pressure Switch Testing
Service Procedures VI — Exhaust Pressure Switch / Blocked Vent Pressure Switch Testing
Confirm the blower energizes
Does the purge LED or error code clear within 5 minutes?
Check exhaust collector pressure at the pressure tap with a manometer
Inspect the combustion system area and control panel
Exhaust/Blocked Vent Pressure Switch Replacement
Turn the main power switch off
Slide back the rubber escutcheon and remove the service panel access cover
Disconnect the silicone tubing and wire leads from the pressure switch
Anode Rod Inspection
Service Procedure XIV — Anode Inspection and Replacement
Turn off the water supply and drain the water heater
Disassemble the heater for access to anodes and flue baffles
Locate and remove the anode rods using a 1-1/16 in. hex socket
Visually inspect each anode rod
Apply thread sealing tape or compound and reinstall the anode rods
Restore the water supply and check for leaks
Reinstall the collector cover
Reinstall the collector insulation and control panel
Flame Sensor Testing
Service Procedure VIII — Flame Sensor Testing & Replacement
Check for a minimum of 1 microamp during the 1.5-second flame-proving period.
Enter the microamp reading during the flame-proving period.
Is the flame-sensing circuit okay?
Enter the 24VAC reading at the ignition module/control board flame-establishing terminals.
Is the expected 24VAC present at the ignition module/control board?
Call technical support if 24VAC is absent.
Check for continuity to ground with the sensor disconnected.
Is there continuity to ground?
Burner Tube Inspection
Service Procedure III — Burner Tube Inspection & Replacement
WARNING — Heater components can be hot during this procedure; take precautions to avoid injury.
Burner Tube Removal
Turn the main power switch off and unplug the water heater, then turn off the gas supply.
Remove the surround cover, then disconnect the gas connection, PVC venting, wire harness, and silicone tubing from the gas valve.
Disconnect the wire harness from the blower assembly.
Remove the two screws holding the hot surface igniter and flame sensor and carefully remove them (for Direct Spark Ignition models, remove the spark rod bracket screws and spark rod instead).
Remove the four nuts holding the burner transition, lift the blower/gas valve/transition assembly off, and set the gasket aside.
Remove the burner tube from the burner mounting insert.
Hot Surface Igniter Testing
Service Procedure VII — Hot Surface Igniter Testing & Replacement
WARNING — 120-volt potential exposure; the igniter may be too hot to handle, so use caution.
Igniter's cold resistance check
Check the igniter's cold resistance
Is the igniter's cold resistance under 150 ohms?
Replace the hot surface igniter if resistance is not under 150 ohms
Ignition module voltage check
Check for 120VAC across the ignition module's igniter terminals during the warm-up period (igniter LED lit)
Is voltage present across the ignition module's igniter terminals?
