Flame Sensor Testing
Service Procedure VIII — Flame Sensor Testing & Replacement
Safety Warning
Be aware of 120-volt potential exposure
Ensure the flame sensor is cool before handling
Flame Sensor Testing
Check for a minimum of 1 microamp during the 1.5-second flame-proving period
Is the flame-sensing circuit okay?
Check for the expected 24VAC at the ignition module/control board flame-establishing terminals
Is 24VAC present at the ignition module/control board?
Spark Rod Gap Inspection
Service Procedure IX — Spark Rod Gap Inspection and Adjustment (Direct Spark Ignition models)
Remove the combustion system per the Combustion System Removal procedure
Measure the spark gap between the spark rod and burner tube
Is the spark gap within the acceptable range of 3/16 in. to 1/4 in.?
Adjust the spark rod if the gap is out of range
Support the spark rod near the ceramic insulator with pliers
Bend the end near the burner tube with needle-nose pliers
Re-measure to confirm the gap is within 3/16 in. to 1/4 in. after bending
Reinstall the combustion system
Flue Baffle Inspection
Service Procedure XIV — Flue Baffle Inspection and Replacement
Warning: Heater components can be hot during this procedure; take precautions to avoid injury.
Disassemble the heater per the Disassembly Procedure for Access to Anodes & Flue Baffles.
Remove the flue baffles with pliers.
Visually inspect the baffles for oxidation and missing restrictors.
Replace any baffle with deteriorated oxidation or missing restrictors.
Reinstall the flue baffles once inspection or replacement is complete.
Reinstall the collector cover per the Collector Cover Installation Procedure.
Apply fresh silicone bead.
Hot Surface Igniter Testing
Service Procedure VII — Hot Surface Igniter Testing & Replacement
WARNING — 120-volt potential exposure; the igniter may be too hot to handle, so use caution.
Igniter's cold resistance check
Check the igniter's cold resistance
Is the igniter's cold resistance under 150 ohms?
Replace the hot surface igniter if resistance is not under 150 ohms
Ignition module voltage check
Check for 120VAC across the ignition module's igniter terminals during the warm-up period (igniter LED lit)
Is voltage present across the ignition module's igniter terminals?
Intake Pressure Switch Testing
Service Procedure XII — Intake Pressure Testing (models prior to serial "CF" only)
Check continuity through the normally closed intake pressure switch if the blower does not energize.
Replace the intake pressure switch if faulty.
Refer to the vent safety switch, exhaust pressure switch, or blower testing procedures if the intake pressure switch is not faulty.
Check continuity through the switch if the purge LED does not illuminate within the expected time.
Confirm the inlet tube pressure tap reads at least -1.2 in. W.C. using a manometer.
Remove the hose from the intake pressure switch and restart the heater to see if the purge LED illuminates.
Did the purge LED illuminate after removing the hose?
Isolate the heater from the intake vent system and restart to isolate a switch versus vent-system fault.
