Ensure all safety measures are in place before opening the pump chamber

Removal of Component Mechanical Seal

Insert brass or plastic bar through port opening to keep shaft from turning

Bend up tang of lockwasher and remove locknut and lockwasher from shaft

Loosen set screws in the face of the bearing housing and remove the bearing housing assembly

Remove the pair of half round rings under the inner spacer collar from the shaft

Loosen nuts and remove seal holder, seal seat and seal gasket(s)

Loosen setscrews in mechanical seal rotary member

Ensure pressure in the chamber is completely vented

Lock out or make non-operational the driving means

Obtain and understand the MSDS for the liquid handled by the pump

Mark head and casing before disassembly

Remove nuts and capscrews from head

Use jack bolts to back head away from casing

Tilt top of head back when removing to prevent idler from falling

Ensure pressure in the chamber is completely vented through the suction or discharge lines.

Lock out or make non-operational the driving means (motor, turbine, engine, etc.).

Identify the liquid the pump has been handling and understand the necessary safety precautions.

Obtain and review the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for the liquid.

Mark valve and head before disassembly to ensure proper reassembly.

Measure and record length of extension of adjusting screw.

Ensure pump ports are square and in proper position

Shim or move the pump as required

Is piping forced to line up with the ports?

Flexible Coupling Alignment Check

Remove any coupling guards or covers

Check alignment of the coupling halves using a straightedge

Check alignment using a long straightedge or tightly drawn string across the face of the sheaves

Perform initial packing adjustment carefully

Ensure packing gland is not over-tightened

Inspect for need of packing gland adjustment or replacement

Contact Viking Pump® representative for Engineering Service Bulletin ESB-521 if needed

Check if occasional packing adjustment is required to maintain slight leakage

Determine if leakage can be reduced by gentle tightening
