CAUTION: For your safety, cleaning of the burner must be performed only by qualified service personnel.

Ensure the burner chamber is sealed before starting.

Remove the burner from the water heater.

Choose cleaning method for the burner

Replace the burner access door gasket if the burner access door was removed.

Inspect the pilot burner through the sight glass with the main burner off

Inspect the main burner through the sight glass while firing

Was any unusual burner operation noted?

Shut off the water heater if unusual operation is noted

Describe any unusual burner operation observed

Is qualified service assistance required?

Venting System and Chimney Inspection

Ensure all components are in place and secure

Is there any soot or deterioration in the vent system?

Did you find soot or deterioration?

If yes, describe the issues found and actions taken

Test for spillage at the draft hood relief opening after 5 minutes of burner operation using a flame of a match or candle or smoke

Shut off gas to the water heater at the gas control (thermostat) gas cock or manual shut-off valve

Ensure no one is exposed to hot water before operating the temperature and pressure relief valve

Open a hot water faucet or lift the handle on the relief valve to admit air to the tank

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the water heater and direct the stream of water to a drain

Ensure the area around the water heater is clear of obstructions

Is the temperature and pressure relief valve functioning properly?

Measure the temperature of the water in the tank

Drain a few quarts of water from the tank

Check for any unusual sediment or debris in the drained water

Is the relief valve outlet clear and unobstructed?
