Routine Preventative Maintenance

Establish and follow a routine preventive maintenance program

Has a periodic inspection of the operating controls, heating element, and wiring been conducted by qualified personnel?

Temperature Pressure Relief Valve Inspection

Lift and release the lever handle on the temperature pressure relief valve to ensure it operates freely

Flush several gallons through the discharge line to an open drain

Is the hissing or singing sound level of the water heater excessively high?

Contact a qualified installer or plumbing contractor if the sound level is excessively high

Shut off power to the water heater

Disconnect all branch circuits before opening the access panel(s)

Ensure no one is exposed to hot water before operating the relief valve

Open a hot water faucet or lift the handle on the relief valve to admit air to the tank

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the water heater

Direct the stream of water to a suitable drain

Turn off power to the water heater

Turn off water supply to the water heater

Will the water heater be subjected to freezing temperatures?

Drain the water heater and piping if necessary

Check the water heater’s operation and controls

Ensure the water heater is completely filled before operation

Anode Rod Inspection and Replacement

Inspect the anode rod for corrosion or wear

Is the anode rod in good condition?

Replace the anode rod if necessary

Check for rotten egg odor in the heated water

Chlorinate the water supply if odor is present

Ensure the anode rod is securely installed

Place the other end of the hose in a bucket or drain
