Temperature Pressure Relief Valve Inspection

Lift and release the lever handle on the temperature pressure relief valve to ensure it operates freely

Allow several gallons to flush through the discharge line to an open drain

Is the hissing or singing sound level of the water heater excessively high?

Contact a qualified installer or plumbing contractor if the sound level is excessively high

Ensure the water heater is turned off and cooled down before inspection.

Check for any signs of corrosion or wear on the anode rod.

Is the anode rod heavily corroded or worn out?

Is replacement of the anode rod necessary?

Replace the anode rod if necessary.

Ensure the anode rod is securely installed.

Shut off power to the water heater

Is the area clear of people before operating the relief valve?

Open a hot water faucet or lift the handle on the relief valve

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve

Turn off power to the water heater

Turn off water supply to the water heater

Will the water heater be subjected to freezing temperatures?

Drain the water heater and piping if necessary

Check the water heater’s operation and controls

Ensure the water heater is completely filled before operation
