Check for possible causes of black smoke

Have the pump settings been checked by the dealer?

Is the maximum speed within the specified range?

Is the idle speed within the specified range?

Is the exhaust smoke level acceptable?

Does the pump require servicing based on the checks?

CAUTION: The cooling water in the engine reaches extremely high temperatures. Use extreme caution when working on hot engines to avoid burns. Allow the engine to cool before working on the cooling system. Open the filler cap carefully, using protective clothing when the engine is warm.

Check the coolant level each day before starting the engine.

Remove the pressure cap from the expansion tank and check water level.

Ensure coolant level is about 1 3/4 in. (4-5 cm) below the filler cap sealing surface when the engine is cold.

Open the venting cock on top of the turbocharger when filling with coolant to prevent air pockets.

Check the pressure valve in the filler cap using a cap pressure tester. It should release at approximately 7 PSI (0.5 bar).

Remove the cooling water pipes between the heat exchanger and the water pump inlet

Disconnect hose to seawater pump

Unscrew the attaching bolts holding the heat exchanger to the expansion tank

Remove bolts holding heat exchanger cover

Were chemical agents used for cleaning?

Is the red filter service indicator button popped up?

Was the filter element changed?

Unscrew the clear plastic cover on the button

Push the indicator down to reset it

Replace the clear plastic cover

Ensure the engine is shut down before performing the service

Use a filter wrench to remove old filter

Dispose of filter in approved manner

Ensure the gasket from the old filter is removed and discarded

Lubricate the rubber gasket on the new filter

Screw the new filter on nipple until gasket meets the sealing surface

Tighten filter one-half turn farther using hands only
