Ensure proper circulation and shut-down procedures

Is the working fluid pipework system arranged for continuous venting?

Determine the action based on shut-down period and corrosion risk

Is the unit to be returned to the manufacturer for inspection, cleaning, or repair?

Drain, flush with water or proper cleaning agent, and redrain if returning to manufacturer

Ensure SHE is shut down and isolated from process and service streams before draining

Drain procedures based on SHE type

Ensure safety before opening the unit

Disassemble hookbolts and remove covers

Dismantle flanged joint for cooling water outlet on Type IIIV

Check for damage when removing residual gasket material

Securely hold unit in place to prevent swinging

Securely fasten hinged covers at piping connections and mounting brackets

Ensure complete reassembly of the SHE before testing

Test one side of the unit before assembling the cover(s) on the other side, if desired

Ensure the face of the SHE body is held down by a rigid beam or other device during testing

Verify the beam is held down by the hookbolts with a weld bead

Confirm the hydrostatic pressure is one and one half (1 1/2) times the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP)

Consult Alfa Laval if hydrostatic testing is not practical and air testing is considered

Retighten hookbolt assemblies in a diagonally opposite sequence

Check recommended torque values in the reassembly section

Select the media to admit first to the SHE

Is it possible to admit the cooler media first?

Start pumps against closed valves

Ensure all pipework and the SHE are filled before opening valves fully

Select the cleaning method used

Ensure pipework is provided with valved branches for cleaning agents circulation

Are the cleaning agents compatible with the materials of construction?

Use proprietary cleaning agents according to manufacturers' instructions

Provide specific cleaning instructions if available

Flush the unit completely of all cleaning agents

Is the unit drained if not put back into operation immediately?
