SHE Shutdown Maintenance
SHUT-DOWN
Allow medium with nearest ambient temperature to circulate after other medium is turned off
Reduce all flow rates slowly to avoid hydraulic and thermal shock
Ensure units with fluids below ambient temperature do not attain ambient temperature while containing fluid against closed valves
Arrange working fluid pipework system for continuous venting
Determine action if shut-down period is short and SHE is not to be opened
Flush with water and drain if risk for freezing exists or if unit is to be opened
Drain, flush with water or cleaning agent, and redrain if returning unit to manufacturer
DRAINING
SHE Channel Inspection
INSPECTION
Examine channels for issues
Is an optical device needed for inspection?
Is massive corrosion or erosion evident?
Is mechanical damage suspected?
Contact Alfa Laval for advice if necessary
SHE Maintenance
Opening
Ensure unit safety before opening
Disconnect the pipework
Remove hookbolts and covers
Dismantle flanged joint for cooling water outlet on Type IIIV
Check for damage when removing gaskets
Secure unit to prevent swinging if mounted on trunnions
Fasten hinged covers at piping connections and mounting brackets
Testing
Cover Gasket Maintenance
Reassembly
Check cover and SHE body alignment
Cut gaskets from sheet material
Verify gasket type for SHE
Ensure gasket and water connection are same thickness for Type IIIV
Select appropriate gasket material
Place gasket and cover correctly
Apply and finger-tighten hookbolts
Tighten hookbolts diagonally using recommended torque
SHE Hydrostatic Testing
TESTING
Ensure complete reassembly of the SHE before testing
Decide if testing one side of the unit before assembling the cover(s) on the other side is desired
If testing one side, ensure the exposed face of the SHE body is held down by a rigid beam or other device
Secure the beam using hookbolts and place a weld bead as shown in the diagram
Verify that the hydrostatic pressure does not exceed one and one half (1 1/2) times the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP)
Consult Alfa Laval if hydrostatic testing is not practical and air testing is considered
