The mission time of functional safety components is 20 years.

The expiry of mission time terminates the certification and SIL/PL classification of the safety function.

Note: Renewal is economical only with larger drives that have replaceable circuit boards and other components such as relays.

The remaining mission time of the whole circuit is however determined by its oldest component.

The intermediate DC circuit of the drive contains several electrolytic capacitors.

Operating time, load, and surrounding air temperature have an effect on the life of the capacitors.

Capacitor life can be extended by decreasing the surrounding air temperature.

Capacitor failure is usually followed by damage to the unit and an input cable fuse failure, or a fault trip.

If you think that any capacitors in the drive have failed, contact ABB.

The capacitors must be reformed if the drive has not been powered (either in storage or unused) for a year or more.

The manufacturing date is on the type designation label.

Before starting, disconnect all possible voltage sources and ensure the installation is de-energized.

Is the work location and equipment clearly identified?

Are all possible voltage sources disconnected and re-connection locked out and tagged out?

Are all dangerous external voltages from the control circuits disconnected?

Have you waited 5 minutes after disconnecting power from the drive to let the intermediate circuit capacitors discharge?

Are all other energized parts in the work location protected against contact?

Have you measured that the installation is de-energized using a quality voltage tester?

Have you installed temporary grounding as required by the local regulations?

Installation de-energized? Use a quality voltage tester to confirm.

Voltage between the drive input power terminals (L1, L2, L3) and the grounding (PE) busbar is zero?

Parameter 05.04 Fan on-time counter indicates the running time of the cooling fan. Reset the counter after a fan replacement. See the firmware manual.

In a speed-controlled fan, the speed of the fan matches the cooling needs. This increases the life span of the fan.

Main fans are speed controlled. When the drive is stopped, the main fan runs at low speed until the drive cools down. IP21 (UL Type 1) frames R5..R9 and all IP55 (UL Type 12) frames have auxiliary fans that are not speed controlled and run all the time when the control unit is powered.

Replacement fans are available from the manufacturer. Do not use other than specified spare parts.
