Ensure all other gas appliances are turned off

Wait for the heating cycle to operate for at least fifteen minutes

Clock the gas meter to determine the time for one complete revolution of the cubic foot dial

Enter the time in seconds for one complete revolution

Enter the number of cubic feet of gas consumed per hour

Enter the calorific value of the gas (BTU per cubic foot)

Replace the filter if disposable

Disconnect all power before servicing or installing the unit.

Check the following furnace components for proper working order

Is the ignitor being handled by a qualified servicer?

Handle the ignitor with care, avoiding touching the ignitor body with bare fingers.

Have all necessary repairs or services been completed?

Turn on the furnace at the thermostat

Wait a few minutes for dislodged dust to settle

Check the burner flames for the following characteristics

Are the flames stable, quiet, soft and blue with slightly orange tips?

Do the flames extend directly outward from the burner ports without curling downward, floating or lifting off the ports?

Connect a manometer to the outlet tap at the gas valve before adjusting the pressure regulator.

Record the initial manifold pressure in inches of water column.

Is the manifold pressure within the acceptable range (3.5 inches for natural gas, 10 inches for propane)?

Adjust the pressure regulator: Turn clockwise to increase pressure, counterclockwise to decrease pressure.

Record the final manifold pressure in inches of water column after adjustment.
