6 Monthly Anti-Friction Bearing Lubrication
Section 3 – Anti-Friction Bearing (Grease Lubricated)
Verify motor conditions
Ensure motor is under standard conditions (8 hrs/day, normal or light loading, clean ambient air at 40°C max)
Check motor nameplate for relubrication intervals and volumes
Select recommended lubricant
Ensure grease is clean and from clean containers
Verify grease compatibility if mixing different greases
Ensure motor is not over-lubricated to prevent premature bearing failure
Ensure grease is free of dirt to avoid damage to motor bearings
1 Monthly Motor Winding Insulation Resistance Testing
Section 3 – Checking Insulation Resistance
Check the insulation resistance of the stator winding with an insulation resistance meter
Record the insulation resistance value
Investigate and take corrective action if there is a significant change in insulation resistance
Calculate the minimum insulation resistance (RM) using the formula: RM = KV + 1
Is the insulation resistance less than the calculated RM?
Dry out the windings if insulation resistance is less than RM
Bake in an oven at a temperature not to exceed 90°C until insulation resistance remains constant
With the rotor locked, apply low voltage and gradually increase current through winding until winding temperature reaches 90°C
1 Monthly Anti-Friction Bearing Lubrication
Section 3 – Anti-Friction Bearing (Grease Lubricated) – Extreme Conditions
Verify applicable conditions
Identify extreme conditions present
Follow lubrication procedure as for the 6 Monthly task
Check relubrication intervals and volumes on the main motor nameplate
Ensure grease is free of dirt to avoid damage to motor bearings

Is the shaft stationary and motor warm?
Stay clear of rotating parts and electrical circuits if lubrication is done with motor running

Verify service conditions
Is the oil discolored or contaminated?
Follow the oil change procedure as per the standard Sleeve Bearing Oil Change task
Select oil viscosity and quality as per Table 3-4 and Section 3 Sleeve Bearings (Oil Lubricated)
Procedure for changing oil
De-energize the motor by opening the manual disconnect switches
Remove drain plug and drain oil
Does the oil appear to be contaminated?
Anti-Friction Bearing Maintenance
Section 3 – Anti-Friction Bearing Removal/Replacement
Ensure safety precautions are in place
Is the bearing worn, oversized, or showing excessive wear based on TRG/bearing temperature monitoring?
Remove the end shield (see Sleeve/Anti-Friction Bearing Bracket Removal)
Remove the bearing using a conventional bearing puller with a spacer block to protect the shaft center
Clean and inspect all parts, removing all old grease
Ensure all shaft bearing shoulders and journals are free of nicks, dressing the shaft with emery cloth or stone as necessary
Heat bearing to 250°F (120°C) for at least 30 minutes
Place bearing onto shaft ensuring contact with the locating shoulder without using impact force
