Heater Tube Replacement
Warning: Heater tubes should be replaced only if deemed advisable from an internal and external inspection.
Are the tubes leaking resulting from a general scale condition, corrosion, electrolysis or overheating?
If such condition is present in several tubes, it is considered advisable to replace the entire set.
Determine the cause of the tube replacement and take the proper precautionary measures to prevent recurrence.
Did the replacement result from overheating?
If yes, proper controls should be installed and sufficient maintenance undertaken to eliminate future problems.
Did the tube replacement result from a water condition?
If yes, all leaks should be repaired so there will be no water loss in the system and proper water treatment used.
Cabinet must be removed for retubing. The cabinet is a two section model and can be removed as follows: Shut off gas and electricity.
Boiler Cleaning and Flushing
Turn off Heater, and main line electrical disconnect switch. Allow Heater to cool to room temperature.
Install a Drain Valve on the Lower Header or if not available, remove one of the Header Caps and drain the System completely. Be careful not to cause Water Damage to Controls or to the Floor if safe drainage is not available.
If the water is dirty, remove the Heat Exchanger from the Boiler. Remove the cap from the other lower Header.
Remove and clean the Expansion Tank.
Take a hose and thoroughly wash the external Heat Exchanger. Wash inside of the Upper Header and down through the Tubes until the System is thoroughly clean.
If it is not possible to clean the Tubes thoroughly or if there is considerable rust of scale deposits, consult the Manufacturer for the recommended cleaning procedure.
If it is not practical to remove the Heat Exchanger, connect the hose to one of the connections off of the Upper Header such as the Expansion Tank Opening, Relief Valve Opening or Pressure Gauge Opening. Allow the water to run through the System and drain until all the water is thoroughly clean.
If the Heat Exchanger is removed, the Gaskets should be replaced and all surfaces carefully cleaned so that the Gasket Surfaces will properly seal against leaks.
Before refilling the Boiler, the Low Water Cut-off Probe(s) and Temperature Control Bulbs should be inspected and cleaned or replaced as necessary. The Low Water Cut-off(s) should be tested for safe operation when re-filling the Boiler.
