Shut off gas supply to the heater

Remove outer cover plate from lower side of heater jacket

Remove hex head screws securing tank cleanout plate

Remove lime, scale, or sediment carefully

Inspect cleanout plate gasket for damage

Lift the lever at the top of the valve several times until the valve seats properly and operates freely.

Check operation of other relief valves if present

Ensure water discharge is safe and does not cause water damage.

Avoid contact with hot water during the operation.

Does the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge periodically or continuously?

Describe any issues observed with the valve operation.

Seal any unused openings in the venting system

Inspect the venting system for proper size and horizontal pitch

Check for blockage, restriction, leakage, corrosion, and other deficiencies

Close all building doors and windows

Close all doors between the water heater space and other spaces

Turn on all appliances not connected to the venting system

Turn on all exhaust fans at maximum speed

Measure the depth of lime buildup in the water heater

Record the depth of lime buildup in inches

Is the lime buildup 1/2 inch or less?

Is the lime buildup 2 inches or more?

Set up a deliming schedule based on lime buildup

Read and follow handling instructions on the deliming product label

Check manifold and inlet gas pressures

Follow 'Pilot Burner' procedure under 'Preventive Maintenance'
