250 Hourly Excavator Maintenance
Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 1) - Obtain
Type of coolant used
Used designated pump for coolant sampling?
Sample obtained from the coolant sample port?
Sample placed in the mailing tube immediately after obtaining?
Sample not collected from expansion bottles or system drain?
Sign off on the coolant sample collection
Engine Oil Sample - Obtain
Access door on the right side of the machine opened?
500 Hourly or 3 Monthly Excavator Maintenance
Engine Crankcase Breather - Clean
1. Unlatch the engine hood. Raise the engine hood.
2. Loosen hose clamp (1). Disconnect outlet hose (2) from breather (3).
3. Loosen four bolts (4). Remove breather (3) and the seal.
Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “General Hazard Information” for information on containing fluid spillage.
4. Wash breather (3) in a clean, nonflammable solvent.
5. Inspect the seal. If the seal is damaged, install a new seal.
6. Install the O-ring seal and clean breather (3). Tighten four bolts (4) to 14 ± 3 N·m (10 ± 2 lb ft).
7. Slide hose on breather (3). Tighten hose clamp (1).
2000 Hourly or 1 Yearly Excavator Maintenance
Engine Valve Lash and Fuel Injector Timing - Check
Engine valve lash checked and adjusted?
Injector fuel timing checked and adjusted?
Engine Valve Rotators - Inspect
Each valve rotator turned slightly whenever the cylinder valve closes?
Final Drive Oil - Change
Final drive oil changed and checked for metal chips or particles?
Receiver Dryer (Refrigerant) - Replace
Refrigerant recovered and receiver-dryer replaced?
Initial 250 Hours Excavator Maintenance
Engine Valve Lash and Fuel Injector Timing - Check
Refer to the Service Manual for the complete procedure for checking the engine valve lash. This procedure lists the steps for the engine valve lash adjustment and the steps in order to check the engine valve lash.
Note: Make sure that a qualified mechanic works on the injector fuel timing. Special tools and training are required.
Refer to the Service Manual for the complete procedure for checking the injector fuel timing or for adjusting the injector fuel timing.
Note: The correct fuel timing specification is given on the Engine Information Plate. Fuel timing specifications may differ for distinct engine applications and/or power ratings.
Final Drive Oil - Change
WARNING: Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.
1. Position one final drive so that oil drain plug (2) is at the bottom.

1 Yearly Excavator Maintenance
Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 2) - Obtain
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 1) - Obtain” for the guidelines for proper sampling of the coolant.
Obtained the sample of the coolant as close as possible to the recommended sampling interval?
Supplies for collecting samples can be obtained from your Cat dealer.
Submit the sample for Level 2 analysis.
For additional information about coolant analysis, refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, “Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations” or consult your Cat dealer.
