Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator - Clean/Replace
Replace the thermostat on a regular basis to reduce the chance of unscheduled downtime and problems with the cooling system.
Replace the thermostat after the cooling system has been cleaned.
If you are only replacing the thermostat, drain the cooling system coolant to a level that is below the thermostat housing.
Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design cooling system. It is mandatory to always operate the engine with a thermostat.
Install the lift cylinder brace. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Lift Cylinder Brace - Connect and Disconnect” for more information.
Open the hood.
Loosen the hose clamp and remove the hose from the thermostat housing assembly.
Remove the bolts from the thermostat housing assembly. Remove the thermostat housing assembly.

1 Yearly Backhoe Loader Maintenance
NOTICE: Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Obtain the sample of the coolant as close as possible to the recommended sampling interval. Supplies for collecting samples can be obtained from your Caterpillar dealer.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 1) - Obtain” for the guidelines for proper sampling of the coolant.

Backhoe Control Console Latch - Lubricate
1. Remove the three bolts and remove the console(1).
2. Place the latch in the closed position.
3. Apply 242-6990 Lubricant onto the following:
• Pivot for the release lever (2)
• Axle for the ca;tch (3)
• Rotor axle (4)
• Notches and catch for the rotor (5)
• Contact for the release lever (6)

Differential Oil (Front) - Change
1. Remove oil drain plug (1) and drain the oil into a suitable container.
2. The drain plug is magnetic. Check the plug for metal.
3. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.
4. Remove oil level/fill plug (2).
5. Add oil until the oil is level with the threads for the filler plug. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Lubricant Viscosities” and Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Capacities (Refill)” for oil.
6. Clean the filler plug and install the filler plug.
Differential Oil (Rear) - Change
The oil change interval should be decreased to 500 hours if more than 50% of the service hours is used for roading and loading.
