Clean the external surfaces as necessary

Ensure the engine is stopped, level, and cool

Clean the area around the oil fill cap/dipstick

Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick and wipe oil off

Reinsert the dipstick into the tube without threading the cap

Remove the dipstick and check the oil level

Is the oil level up to, but not over the 'F' mark on the dipstick?

Add oil if the level is low, up to the 'F' mark

Remove the wing nut and air cleaner element

Remove the precleaner from the paper element, if equipped

Gently tap the flat side of the paper element to dislodge dirt

Is the paper element dirty, bent, or damaged?

Replace the element with a genuine Kohler element if necessary

Inspect the rubber seal on the stud for wear or damage

Replace the rubber seal if it is worn, damaged, or questionable

Precleaner Removal and Cleaning

Remove the precleaner from the paper element

Wash the precleaner in warm water with detergent

Rinse the precleaner thoroughly until all traces of detergent are eliminated

Squeeze out excess water (do not wring)

Allow the precleaner to air dry

Saturate the precleaner with new engine oil

Is distilled water needed to maintain the recommended level?

Add distilled water if necessary

Keep the cables, terminals, and external surfaces of battery clean

Wash the cables, terminals, and external surfaces with a baking soda and water solution

Rinse thoroughly with clear water

Ensure no baking soda solution enters the cells
