Ensure all plates and gaskets are properly installed

Verify that the media side to be tested is closed

Ensure the other media side is open to the atmosphere

Enter the operating pressure of the unit

Enter the design pressure as stated on the name plate

Is the test pressure equal to the operating pressure and not above the design pressure?

Perform pressure test on the media side

Ensure the heat exchanger is turned off and cooled down

Gather cleaning materials: soft brush, 10% nitric acid, and water

Clean the plates with a soft brush and 10% nitric acid

Rinse the plates thoroughly with water

Ensure the following acids are NOT used

Close the valves and isolate the heat exchanger from the rest of the system

Remove the protective sheets, if any

Dismantle pipes from the pressure plate and the connections plate(s)

Inspect the sliding surfaces of the carrying bar and wipe clean

Mark the plate assembly on the outside by a diagonal line

Measure and note down the dimension A

Preparation of Cleaning Solutions

Dissolve 1 kg of NaOH in 100 litres of water or mix 2.2 litres of 33% NaOH solution in 100 litres of water for lye solution

Mix 0.7 litres of 53% HNO3 in 100 litres of water for acid solution

Ensure water used has less than 300 ppm Cl ions

Handle sodium hydroxide and nitric acid with care
