Chiller Refriegerant Charging
Warning: Only trained personnel should perform this procedure.
Is the vapor portion of the refrigerant container or cylinder free from contamination?
Select the appropriate saturation property for the refrigerant
Refer to Table 55 on page 314 for R-134a to determine if the saturation pressure and ambient temperature of the refrigerant in the container coincide.
Is the system pressure raised above the corresponding saturation pressure at the freezing point of the chilled liquids?
Enter the freeze point temperature
Enter the vapor charge pressure
Enter the starting weight for the refrigerant cylinder
Is the chiller vapor charged to the appropriate saturation pressure?
1 Yearly Chiller Maintenance
This procedure must be performed at the specified time by an industry certified technician who has been trained and qualified to work on this type of equipment.
A record of this procedure being successfully carried out should be maintained on file by the equipment owner should proof of adequate maintenance be required at a later date for warranty purposes.
Sample compressor oil, check for acid, and replace if necessary.
Disconnect power source and lock out and check tightness of power wiring connections.
Check glycol concentration on low temperature or other applications where freezing may be a problem.

Chiller Optional Trace Gas Leak Test
Install a high-quality, high-resolution analog pressure gauge on one of the service valves
All system valves including manual valves and EEVs are 100% open
All valves to the atmosphere are closed with flare caps in place
Unit is at the initial evacuation level of 5 mmHg
Charge with a vapor only for a 10% trace gas, R-134a based on nameplate, into the chiller until the system pressure reaches 10 psig (69 kPa)
Connect hoses to the high and low side of the system and add dry nitrogen into the chiller until the pressure reaches 100 psig (690 kPa)
Concentration of trace gas has reached all parts of the system
Any vented gas has been adequately vented from the chiller area
Each joint and factory weld has been tested
Chiller Refriegerant Charge Check
Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!
Enter the amount of chiller refrigerant charge
Reference the unit Sales Order screen on the chiller control panel to determine the required charge
Enter the evaporator approach (STD)
Enter the discharge superheat
Enter the subcooling
These values depend on tube selection, chilled fluid type, operating head, and operating conditions
Enter the Evaporator Saturation Temperature (EST)
Enter the Leaving evaporator liquid temperature (LCHLT)
Chiller Leak Testing
Warning: This procedure should only be performed by a qualified technician.
Leak Testing
Has the system been carefully pressure tested and evacuated at the factory?
Enter the leak rate for a 100% pure R-134a system at DWP
Are all joints tight and leak-free?
If any leaks are indicated, they must be repaired immediately.
Have all leaks been repaired?
Leak Testing During Operation
Has the system been carefully leak tested with a compatible leak detector after charging?
