Stator Winding Insulation Drying
Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!
Motor dismantled completely
End shields, rotor with shaft, fan cover, fan and terminal box removed
Wound stator with frame transferred to oven
Oven temperature
Stator placed in oven for two hours
Is the motor large?
For larger motors, a longer drying time may be required
Stator allowed to cool to room temperature
Insulation Resistance Measurement
Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!
Is the machine in a cold state and disconnected from the power supply?
If machine is not in a cold state and disconnected from the power supply, stop the procedure and ensure these conditions are met.
Is the environment safe for insulation resistance measurement?
If the environment is not safe, stop the procedure and ensure safety.
Are all external devices disconnected and grounded?
If not, disconnect and ground all external devices.
Measure the insulation resistance one minute after the voltage has been applied to the winding.
Ground the terminals before and after each measurement.
Motor Maintenance
Warning: All repair services on motors for use in hazardous areas must be performed by qualified personnel and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Always use proper tools and devices for motor disassembly and assembly.
Motor disconnected from the power supply and is completely stopped?
Warning: Dangerous voltages may be present at the motor terminals inside the terminal box since capacitors can retain electrical charge even when not connected to a power source.
Warning: Dangerous voltages may be present when space heaters are connected to the motor or when motor windings are used as space heaters.
Warning: Dangerous voltages may be present at the motor terminals when driven by a frequency inverter even when the motor is completely stopped.
For enclosure-protected motors, is the terminal box opened and/or motor disassembled only after the enclosure surface has cooled to ambient temperature?
Record installation conditions such as terminal connection diagram and alignment or leveling conditions before starting disassembly.
Use these records for later assembly.
Motor Inspection
Visual inspection of the motor and coupling
Check for abnormal noises, vibrations, excessive heating, wear signs, misalignment or damaged parts
Replacement of damaged parts as required
Measurement of the insulation resistance
Cleaning of the motor enclosure
Removal of oil spills and dust accumulation from the motor frame surface
Cleaning of motors with potential risk for electrostatic charge accumulation
Check cooling fan condition and clean the air inlet & outlet openings
Investigation of the actual condition of the seals and replacement, if required
Motor Lubrication
Warning: Proper lubrication plays a vital role in motor performance. Only use the grease or oil types, amounts and lubrication intervals recommended for the bearings.
Type of lubricant used (oil or grease)
When the motor is fitted with thermal protection devices for bearing temperature control, consider the operating temperature limits.
The grease and oil disposal should be made in compliance with applicable laws in each country.
Excess grease causes bearing overheating, resulting in bearing failure.
For each increment of 15 °C above the room temperature, the relubrication intervals given in the Table must be halved.
For special applications such as high and low temperatures, aggressive environments, or driven by frequency inverter (VFD), contact WEG about the required amount of grease and relubrication intervals.
Motor without grease fitting: Motors without grease fittings must be lubricated in accordance with the existing Maintenance Plan.
Motor with grease fitting: To lubricate the bearings with the motor stopped, proceed as follows.
